Iconic sunglasses

There are certain sunglass styles that we automatically associate with celebrities. These iconic frames have shaped the eyewear choices of the public for years.

The first pair of sunglasses that come to mind when I’m thinking in terms of icons are Wayfarers. These are the sunglasses that you see on Audrey Hepburn in the classic, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”; the same shades are seen 22 years later on Tom Cruise in “Risky Business” and are worn by the Blues Brothers. Wayfarers can also be spotted in “Couples Retreat,” “Takers,” and “My Name is Khan.”

Ray-Ban Aviator Hero Sunglasses

Ray-Ban aviator sunglasses have a classic design that is popular in the movies and with celebrities, on and off the screen.

Aviators were developed by Ray-Ban to be issued to the military, but when they were worn by Tom Cruise in “Top Gun,” there was a boom in demand for aviators across the country. Aviators are also worn in “17 Again,” “Knight and Day,” “Sex and the City 2,” and “The Hangover.”

Other movies with iconic sunglasses are the Predators worn by Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in “Men in Black,” the futuristic shades throughout “The Matrix,” and the boxy ANSI Classics worn in “The Terminator.”

I’m most thankful for Jackie O who started craze for fashionable oversized sunglasses, a trend that is still going strong today.

The sunglasses that will most likely be considered iconic from today are shutter shades, brought back from the 80s thanks to Kanye West and his “Stronger” music video, and orange-tinted shades sported by U2 lead singer, Bono.
