This past fall, I wanted to rebrand part of my look. So I decided to try contacts for the first time.

Step 1 – Picking the Right Contacts

I went to the optometrist, and she told me I have astigmatism. To provide an over-simplified, exaggerated explanation, she said my eyes are shaped like footballs, not spheres. That’s not a problem though because there are contacts specifically for people with astigmatism.

When she asked me how often I was planning on wearing contacts and I told her I was going to wear them at least half the days out of the week, she suggested the contacts you replace monthly. She said these are more cost effective than the contacts you replace daily or weekly.

Based on my needs, she suggested I try the Air Optix for Astigmatism.

Step 2 – Putting Contacts in Your Eyes

Inserting your contact lenses

1. Wash my hands and dry them with a paper towel.
2. Put the contact on the index finger tip of my right hand.
3. Hold down a bottom eyelid with the middle finger of my right hand.
4. Pull up the top lid with the index finger of my left hand.
5. Place the contact on my eye.
6. Blink multiple times so that the lens can center.

Sounds simple enough, right? Well, forty-five minutes later, my eyes were red from trying to pull my eyelids back. And there were still no contacts in my eyes.

The optometrist suggested I come back a few days later and try again. So I went home that day with no contacts, wondering if I would ever be able to wear them.

Two days later, I was back in the office, ready to try again. I decided to try a different method by separating my eye with the index and middle fingers of my left hand, but still using my right index finger to put them in.

Forty-five minutes after I arrived, I actually got one in! I was so excited. My feelings of achievement were up there with graduating college and starting my first real job. Fifteen minutes later, the other one was in my eye. I couldn’t believe that I was actually wearing contacts.

Step 3 – Taking Contacts Out of Your Eyes

Removing your contact lenses

The doctor told me to hold my eyelids back the same way as before and to use the thumb and index finger of my other hand to pinch the contact out. The idea of pinching my eyes was not something I sure I was going to be able to do, as I pictured myself pinching my eye right out of its socket. But the optometrist assured me that wouldn’t happen.

To my surprise, 15 minutes later, they were out easier than they went in.

Other ways of removing contacts include the following:

• Slide the contact to the lower part of the eye and pinch the contact there to remove it.
• Press in with your forefinger on the center of the upper lid and thumb on the center of the lower lid, force a blink and catch the lens as it falls out.

Step 4 – Cleaning Your Contacts

Now that I was able to take my contacts home, the optometrist told me about how to clean them. She said to put them in the contacts lens case, fill the case up with contacts solution and leave them overnight. One important thing she also said was to throw away the used contact solution each time I took the contacts out, not to reuse it.

Selecting Tactical Goggles
Whether in training or in battle, it is critical that your eyewear protect you from ultraviolet radiation, of which up to 85% can be reflected off snow. This means you need sunglasses or goggles in both sunny and overcast conditions. Snow blindness is a sunburn on the surface of the eye and the most common skiing injury that optometrists treat.

Skiing without goggles, regardless of weather conditions, increases exposure to UV rays, which puts people at risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, the number one cause of blindness in seniors.

People don’t usually think about the potential for eye injuries but they can happen. If you take a bad fall while wearing inappropriate eyewear, the lenses can break and cut your eyes; if you aren’t wearing any eyewear at all, a low branch can do serious damage to your eyes.

Goggles
If you prefer to wear a goggle, use the same lens color guidelines. Make sure the goggle is well ventilated to prevent fogging. Goggles should fit properly and comfortably and should be tinted in accordance to weather conditions, for additional safety.

A good all purpose tint is gray, with or without a mirror. For hazy conditions choose cinnamon, or amber. And for foggy days a vermilion or yellow tint helps to enhance what you see. Goggles with interchangeable lenses are good options for people who want to be well prepared.

Frames
We recommend a plastic frame since these hold up much better in the cold. Metal frames become brittle in the cold and may break. Wraps are very popular since they protect your eyes from wind and snow, which is especially important for contact lens wearers. They also help block out incidental light from the sides, helping to minimize glare.

Lenses
Most importantly, the sunglasses/goggles should offer 100% UV protection. Since glare increases on surfaces such as snow and regular sun lenses do not provide adequate absorption of glare, you may want to consider polarized lenses which absorb 98% of the glare so you don’t need to squint.

Please Note: Polarized lenses absorb so much glare that you may not be able to distinguish patches of ice from regular snow. You also may want to consider a photochromatic lens, which will lighten or darken according to the amount of light, getting darker in bright sunlight, and lighter in an overcast sky.

Polycarbonate lenses are highly recommended because of their impact resistance. Polycarbonate is also more fog resist than any other lens. Plastic provides adequate protection but can still shatter. Avoid glass lenses if at all possible. When skiing in bright sunlight, you should wear a sun lens. A brown or amber lens will provide the best contrast against a white background and works well for lower light conditions (i.e. when the sun goes behind the clouds).

The So Soon Team

Serving as an independent multi-disciplinary cluster of young professionals specializing in fashion eyewear, So Soon is structured to reproduce on a small scale the vertically integrated design center of the Italian eyewear companies, providing all the activities related to the development of a collection from inception to commercialization. “Italian companies have successfully monopolized the eyewear market for decades by making large investments on design, technologies and human resources. As competition is getting global, smaller players who can’t afford such internal facilities are likely to remain cut off from the game”, Livans said. “So Soon has been launched to fill this gap: it’s our mission to make this Italian expertise on design, product development, marketing, graphic design and communication globally available to optical companies and fashion houses”.

As creative director and head designer, Matteo Livans will be joined by marketing veteran Antonio Piazza who will be in charge as brand development manager. Technical designer Amar Amoretti, who worked on brands such as Beverly Hills Polo Club, will be working as CAD designer. Additionally, award-winning graphic designer Fabio Trovato, well known for his visual designs aired on MTV, will head up the graphic and web division. The team also proudly appointed plating expert Paolo Bersaglio, former technical manager for world leader companies in the jewelry plating sector, as responsible for the colors and materials R&D department. Anna Oberhauser, who handled the PR for Alessandro dell’Acqua and Alexandra de Curtis and works with fashion and luxury brands, will round out the team overseeing public relations activities for all the clients of So Soon.

By investing in the specific specialties of each expert within the team, So Soon will be offering the service of a big design agency while maintaining the flexibility of a freelance consultancy. “Chances are over for ordinariness in today’s market, incoming challenges require a different approach to be the standard not only for standing out, but just to remain competitive”, Livans said. “The success of the Italian eyewear industry has been determined by such straight forward attitude towards both style and business”, Piazza went on to say. “Additionally to the finest design, So Soon will provide comprehensive strategic plans and trend forecast services such as WGSN for enabling wholesalers and emerging brands to be structured like the big firms on an easy way, helping them establishing their own brand on an international basis”.

Matteo Livans is a twice MA graduated Italian product designer, having designed international eyewear and sunglasses collections for top fashion brands such as Armani, Hugo Boss and Valentino. With over 8 years of experience in bringing to market fashion and luxury eyewear, Matteo has been working as full-time designer in both fashion houses and optical companies, such as Sŕfilo for three years. He as well has previously been part of the design team of Allison where he designed such iconic brands as Vivienne Westwood, Gianfranco Ferrč and Romeo Gigli.
