Contact Lens Safety Tips

Fox News Health Blog published and list of great tips for contact lens users by Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus.
The entire article, titled Seeing Clearly: Safety Tips to Ensure Healthy Contact Lens Use, includes these highlights:
1. Wash and dry your hands before handling your lenses
2. Do not wear lens overnight and if possible try daily disposables
3. Always keep lenses, the solutions, and the storage cases in a clean, dry environment. Never use regular tap water to clean your lenses or cases.
4. Do not “share” lenses with friends or relatives. (The fit may be incorrect and you can potentially cause more harm than good).
5. Don’t purchase cosmetic lenses without a proper examination and recommendation from an eye care specialist.
The article was published after Fox News reported on an Australian man suing a U.S. contact lens solution maker, claiming the solution caused partial blindness.

The contact lens case is often a harbor for bacteria and as such, should be replaced regularly or cleaned. Cleaning of a lens case involves briefly placing the case in boiling water after having manually cleaned the case. If you have a spare pair of lenses in your medicine cabinet, try to replace the solution and clean the case every two weeks. You may purchase new cases for pennies and often your doctor will provide you with free, sterile new cases if you ask.
