There are three steps to cleaning your contact lenses. These three steps are Scrubbing, Storing, and Soaking. Each one of these methods requires a different contact lens solution, though all-in-one solutions are available.

Before washing your contacts, it’s important to know the different types of contact lens solutions to ensure that you use the right one for your needs.

Saline solution – Saline solution is designed to clean the lens by removing dirt, chemicals, and residue from other contact lens solutions. Saline solution’s primary purpose is for storage and to clean the lens before insertion, but not to be used as a disinfectant.

Hydrogen peroxide (or disinfecting) solution – Peroxide solution is designed for storage of your contact lens to remove unwanted buildup. While disinfecting in this solution overnight, the peroxide extracts bacteria and other elements from your contact that are known to cause eye infections like Conjunctivitis, or what’s commonly referred to as “pink eye.”

Multi-purpose solution – Multi-purpose solution combines daily cleanser with disinfecting solution. This solution is commonly the most used, because it can serve as a daily cleanser, and as an overnight storage to remove protein. Contact lens wearers that use the multi-purpose solution on a daily basis typically don’t have a need for the other solutions.

Enzyme cleaner/Protein remover – This solution removes protein buildup from the contact. This product can come in liquid or pill form, and both usually require to be used in combination with another solution.

Daily Cleanser – This solution is used to cleanse the contact prior to disinfection. It removes debris that might cause eye irritation and other discomforts. Daily cleanser is not recommended for storage.

Now that we’ve addressed the types of contact lens solutions, let’s start with the process of cleaning your contact lenses.

Step one, Scrubbing
This step should occur before you put the contact lens in your eye, and after you take it out. You should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before you begin. First, place the contact in the palm of your hand. Next, take your other hand and apply the contact lens solution to the contact until the contact is submerged in the solution. Then take your index finger, and gently rub the contact on both sides for 10-15 seconds. Be sure to scrub gently, scrubbing the contact lens too aggressively may cause the contact to tear and make it unsuitable for use.

Step 2, Storing
After you have scrubbed both sides of the contact lens, place the contact inside a contact lens case and fill the reservoir up with contact lens soaking solution until the contact is completely submerged. Make sure that the lens is completely covered and not folded, or the soaking solution will not be able to reach all parts of the contact. Once the contact is in the case which is filled with solution, screw the case cap on securely. After the cap is screwed on, do not turn the case upside down or on its side. Doing so could cause the contact to slide out of the solution, and not be properly cleaned.

Step 3, Soaking
Once your contacts are stored properly in the contact lens case, let them soak in the solution overnight or as directed. After soaking for the proper amount of time, your contacts should be free of dirt and debris, and ready to be placed into your eyes. If there is still dirt or debris on your contact lens, you can repeat step one before inserting the contact into your eye.

Here’s the catch: This video, a promo for StarkHUD 2020 augmented reality sunglasses, boasts that these shades have digital screens in the lenses that are Wi-Fi capable, so wearers can surf the net, socialize via online networking, and basically do everything that’s capable on your iPhone. Menu sidebars pop up right in front of your eyes that are navigable through voice activation and touching non-existent buttons in the air.

Here’s the second catch: Despite what you may have read in other random blog posts, these sunglasses are not real. It’s actually a social media campaign for Iron Man 2, and a rather clever one at that. Sorry to disappoint anyone who was salivating over these futuristic shades, but I’m sure devices like this will be available in the very near future – for better or for worse. Until then, let’s enjoy socializing face to face without the intermission of electronics and sunglass apps while we still can.

I want to talk to you a little bit about frame size. If you already have a pair that fits you well, the frame measurements are written on the inside arm of the frame. If you don’t see the measurements written on the inside arm of the frame, they are sometimes written on or just behind the nose bridge. So what do these numbers mean? In this example, there are several numbers and letters written on the inside of the frame. The numbers we’re looking for are eye size, bridge size and temple length. Eye size is the horizontal width of the lens area in millimeters. Bridge size is the distance between the two optical lenses, also measured horizontally in millimeters. These two numbers are usually very close together and are separated by a box or a slash. The temple length, or length of the arm piece, is a three-digit number, usually between one hundred thirty to one hundred sixty five millimeters. To determine which size is most suitable for you, the question I would ask you is what do you think the overall width of your face is? Is it small, medium or large? Answer that question and you will know exactly the right size frame size to pick. We consider small eye sizes to be from forty to about forty eight millimeters. Medium eye sizes can range from about forty nine to fifty four millimeters. Large eye sizes are from about fifty five to fifty eight millimeters. Extra large, anything above fifty eight.

In this video, we’re going to discuss glaucoma, one of the most common eye disorders in the world today.

Glaucoma is an eye disorder involving the optic nerve. It’s often associated with an unsafe build-up of intraocular pressure on the nerve, which can cause serious damage. Left untreated, glaucoma can lead from a noticeable loss of peripheral vision to complete blindness.

Following cataracts, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the United States. Around half of the 2.5 million Americans with glaucoma will experience at least some vision loss.

Symptoms
Because it typically has no symptoms and is painless, glaucoma is often referred to as “the silent thief of sight.” As a result it, it often progresses unchecked until the optic nerve suffers irreversible damage.

Types of Glaucoma
Glaucoma has been categorized into 6 different types.

The first is primary open-angle glaucoma or POAG, which progresses slowly and often goes undetected until serious eye damage has occured. Untreated, it can result in loss of peripheral vision eventually leading to tunnel vision.

Normal-tension glaucoma is similar to POAG, and causes damage to the optic nerve, but the intraocular pressure remains low. Doctors are still unsure what causes normal-tension glaucoma but suspect it has something to do with poor blood flow to the optic nerve.

Pigmentary glaucoma is a rare form of glaucoma caused by pigment deposits from the iris that clog the draining angles and prevent proper liquids from leaving the eye. Eventually the body’s inflammatory response to the blockage damages the drainage system.

Angle-closure glaucoma is unique in causing sudden symptoms such as eye pain, headaches, halos around lights, nausea, vomiting and vision loss. The symptoms may come in waves, or attacks, that last several hours and then subside. Each wave carries away part of your field of vision.

Secondary glaucoma is triggered by a preceding event such as an eye injury or infection.

Congenital glaucoma is present at birth and around 80 percent of cases are diagnosed by age one. Because children so young cannot communicate, it is hard to detect signs of congenital glaucoma.

Treatment
Depending on its severity and how far the disease has progressed, treatment can involve surgery, lasers, or medicated eye drops. However, because glaucoma is relatively painless, patients tend to lapse in their treatments, which is the leading reason for glaucoma causing blindness.

Blindness might soon become a thing of the past thanks to some awesome Aussie technology, and some generous funding from the Australian government. Bionic Vision Australia, a company bent on restoring vision to the blind, has recently received a $42 million from the Australian government to fund their bionic sunglasses project. This technology uses a pair of sunglasses with a camera installed to transmit images to a computer chip inside the eye. They’re shooting for 2013 as the initial launch date. If all goes according to plan, blindness could be eliminated within the next decade.
