How to Disguise Your Personality with a Pair of Eyeglasses

In the classic cartoon series Superman, the man of steel used eyeglasses to disguise his personality. With the glasses, he became Clark Kent, mild-mannered reporter who worked for the Daily Planet, and no one could tell that he was a superhero.

Are you looking to disguise your true identity as a superhero? Or, do you just have two personalities that you want to switch between?

It’s amazing how much a pair of eyeglasses can change others’ perception of you. Whatever personality you want to take on, whether real or fake, there is a pair of eyeglasses for you. Get some ideas from the following personalities.

The quiet, nerdy student — D&G has a lot of geeky frames to fit this personality. Your inner-nerd will geek out at the letter print on some versions of the D&G DD5102 Eyeglasses for women. The men’s D&G DD1225 Eyeglasses offer two-toned frames, making you look good while studying. You may even catch the eye of the other studious boy or girl at the library in one of these frames.

The center of attention — Outgoing social butterflies like to stand out at a party. Nothing says “look at me” like the women’s Lafont Baroque Eyeglasses. First of all, the floral cut-outs that extend from the frame front to the temples are not something you typically see on a pair of eyeglasses. In addition though, the small rhinestones add some sparkle and shine to the temples, making the frames look almost like costume glasses.

Looking intimidating — If you think those tattoos on your arms don’t do enough to make people nervous, add some eyewear to the mix. The Von Zipper Ctrl + Alt + Del Eyeglasses for men come in large rectangular frames, giving the wearer a look of confidence and strength. No one will want to mess with you in these eyeglasses.

Living a happy-go-lucky philosophy — If your idea of a good day is lounging at happy hour or enjoying a picnic in the park, Ray-Ban is the style for you. All day, any day, the Ray-Ban RX RX5226 Eyeglasses for women will fit perfectly into a chill lifestyle. As one of Ray-Ban’s most popular eyeglasses, these cat-eyed frames are stylish enough to make you feel comfortable in any situation.

Fast-paced business lifestyle — If you spend all day rushing from meeting to meeting, you need a pair of eyeglasses to give you confidence and style but that are conservative enough for a formal environment. For men, the Burberry BE1213 Eyeglasses will make anyone doing business with you want to trust you. The Burberry BE1209 Eyeglasses for women also look important enough for you to pull off a million-dollar business deal.

Marc by Marc Jacobs MMJ 477 Eyeglasses

Starving artist — If you choose your love of painting over a more “realistic” office job, you need a special pair of eyeglasses. You don’t want anything to take away from your actual art, but you want something that’s a little fun. The Marc by Marc Jacobs MMJ 477 Eyeglasses for women come in stripes of color, whether on the inside or outside, to add a special level of creativity and fun to the frames.

Aspiring musician — If you lock yourself up in your room, brooding away until you write the perfect song, you need to look the part. The John Varvatos V336 Eyeglasses will make you fit right in with your band. They are simple enough, with the small rectangular shape and thin temples, to prove you aren’t trying too hard.

Grandmotherly type — If you are always baking cookies for people and knitting them sweaters, you may have grandparent tendencies. And you need some simple frames to complete the look, as you recount stories about “back in your day,” whether it was 40 or 4 years ago. The women’s Ralph Lauren RL5071 Eyeglasses will make you look the part, as they will go well with your terry cloth house coat.

Oakley Servo Eyeglasses

Oakley Servo Eyeglasses

Athletic and active lifestyle — For years, Oakley has been designing eyeglasses for amateur and professional athletes. For the athlete who just wants to chill out but still sport some Oakleys, the Oakley Servo Eyeglasses for men are a pretty good choice. With straight temples, these frames say sporty with a confident, take-charge look like nothing else.

Nostalgic for things of the past — If you spend your weekends learning how to dance the 1920s Charleston and your evenings watching reruns of Downton Abbey, we have the frames for you. Try the men’s Savile Row Round with Nosepads (OSRC7) Eyeglasses. These perfectly-round frames will fit in so well with your straw boater hat and suited vest that you may opt for this style on more days than just once a week.

Jewelry for Your Eyes: Top 12 Eyeglasses and Sunglasses

For the ultimate luxury experience, add a little bling to your eyes.

I’m not talking about piercing your eyebrow or adding small gems to your eyelid. I’m talking about wearing eyeglasses or sunglasses with shiny and radiant details, similar to jewelry.

Eyewear designers get inspiration for eyewear from all items in their collection: bags, belts, shoes and even clothing. However, many ideas for embellishments come from the brand’s jewelry collection: bracelets, rings, necklaces, broaches and all that makes them pop and sparkle – diamonds, stones, studs and gems. Most of the jewels found on eyewear are Swarovski crystals, which are also used in glass sculptures and chandeliers in addition to jewelry.

Caviar 5564 Eyeglasses

Wearing this type of eyewear is sure to make you feel like you own something special. Even when you aren’t wearing them to see through, you will want to wear them on your head like a headband or another accessory. And just like jewelry, don’t be surprised if you start seeing this type of eyewear in jewelry stores soon.

Check out our list of top 12 of eyeglasses and sunglasses that will bring more attention and sparkles to your eyes and face!

  1. Caviar 5564 Eyeglasses - Don’t shy away from icing the sides of your eyes. These Caviar eyeglasses aren’t shy at all, bringing together what looks like bracelets and earrings to make up the temples. The simplicity of the rest of the frame front makes them wearable and highly unique.
  2. Giorgio Armani 722/S Sunglasses – Insects are a frequent theme in jewelry. Similar to something you would see on a necklace or a broach, the crystallized dragon on these rimless shades makes them highly unique. The dragonfly looks as if it’s just resting on the lens before flying away.
  3. Silhouette Rimless Gem Stone Eyeglasses - A crystal in the center of a piece of metal certainly sounds like a piece of jewelry. The cut of the crystal on these frames is so polished and symmetrical that you will want to use it to make your own earrings or rings.
  4. Fendi FS5127 Sunglasses

    Fendi FS5127 Sunglasses

  5. Fendi FS5127 Sunglasses – Sophistication is the theme of these square-shaped Fendi sunglasses. With inspiration from a vintage cameo ring, the metal pieces on the temples will add the right amount of class to your face.
  6. Versace VE1114B Eyeglasses - Smaller rhinestones can also make a pair of eyeglasses look like a delicate piece of jewelry. The V-shaped temples of these frames add to the elegance of the frames, which is reflected in the crystals as well as small engravings of Versace greca and the iconic Medusa head.
  7. Lafont Bahia Sunglasses - While the lenses are square-shaped, the temples are round. At least sections of the temples are round. Resembling large beads, the temple pieces look as if they were cut from a necklace.
  8. Bebe BB5015 Eyeglasses

    Bebe BB5015 Eyeglasses

  9. Bebe BB5015 Eyeglasses - As the only semi-rimless pair of eyeglasses on this list, these frames stand out for more than just their gems. The geometric placement of the jewels on these frames could be inspired by bracelets and necklaces with square or rectangular gems.
  10. Vera Wang Evon Sunglasses - Vera Wang takes inspiration for temple decorations from the gems on her shoes. And the inspiration for the shoes comes from the bold, irreverent clusters of her jewelry collection. Following this pattern, these gems accent the temples in an abundant cluster.
  11. Vera Wang Evon Sunglasses

    Vera Wang Evon Sunglasses

  12. Marc Jacobs 325 Eyeglasses - The gems on the temples of these frames aren’t just hanging around each other. They are placed strategically to look like a flower, like you would find on a pair of earrings. The jewels also have different colors, each of which complements the frame’s color.
  13. Versace VE4044B Sunglasses - Whether you would wear a small trinket on a necklace or as a broach, you now have one other way. Wear it at the hinges of sunglasses, as in these Versace sunglasses. And if you didn’t notice, small studs surround the trinket, giving it a little extra shine.
  14. Roberto Cavalli RC0493 Eyeglasses - Resembling a chain bracelet, you may wonder why the temples of these frames don’t collapse. You might even be tempted to stick charms on each link even though the eyeglasses can be as intriguing just the way they are.
  15. Gucci 2772/S Sunglasses - As another pair of shield sunglasses, these shades are large and exciting, particularly the details of the round pieces and the links on the chain temples. In addition to jewelry, these temples resemble the chain of a fancy watch.

As a bonus, you can add chains to the temples of your eyeglasses, making them look like a necklace hanging around your neck when you aren’t wearing them. The Corinne McCormack Readers Chains and the Corinne McCormack Readers EyeRings come in quite a few different options. Beaded, linked and slinky silver chains are among some of the chains similar to jewelry.

Customizable Shades: Louis Vuitton’s 4 Motion Sunglasses

4Motion sunglasses from Louis Vuitton have 4 points of customization.

“Customizable sunglasses” is a term that is relatively unknown to the general public. Sure you can pick a certain frame color, lens coatings, frame material and sometimes switchable lenses, but you pull that pair of shades out of the box and what you see is what you get.

Until the 4Motion sunglasses.

Luis Vuitton, the well known French luxury luggage company, recently announced that they have invented a new kind of customizable pair of sunglasses that will adhere to each wearer’s cranium individually. The shades, called 4Motion are a sporty, plastic-framed eyepiece that look similar to Oakley design. The difference? Four adjustable points. The temples can be manually shortened or lengthened to fit individual face shape. Nose piece is also adjustable. The height of the frame can be raised or lowered to adhere to forehead sizes. And front inclination and temple curvature can also be adjusted. For a pair of custom-fitting sunglasses, it doesn’t get much more customized than this.

Here’s the catch: the price tag. Retail value for these new age shades is between $620 and $720. You might be thinking that you could use the FramesDirect.com virtual mirror and find a pair of shades for hundreds of dollars less, which you could, but they wouldn’t have the luxurious LV logo. So what it really boils down to is which is more important to you: fashion or function?

Lady Gaga and Polaroid introduce Camera Sunglasses

For someone who is used to having cameras snapping at them night and day, I guess it’s not surprise that Polaroid approached Lady Gaga for a camera sunglasses collab. Given that she also wears sunglasses like the rest of us wear clothes, Lady G is a prime candidate.

Polaroid recently announced that in their partnership with Gaga (she was named their Creative Director last year), they have plans to release a pair of sunglasses called the GL20, which have a built-in camera in the nose piece that allows the wearer to take pictures at will. After the pic is snapped, the LCD lenses allow the wearer to show their pics to their friends. There’s also a USB drive in the arm of the sunglasses that lets the wearer download their pictures or send them to a printer. AND the shades are Bluetooth enabled so you can send them to a printer via Bluetooth (and why not use the GL10 instant mobile printer by Gaga for this operation?). AND the lenses have high powered lasers that can burn through 10 inches of solid steel (actually this part isn’t true, but the rest is).

Lady Gaga's G20 sunglasses have a camera and two LCD screens.

The photos are 5 megapixels and there’s a shutter button cleverly hidden on the side of the frames. The frames themselves are large, black and mysterious – total Lady Gaga style (minus the burning cigarettes).

There’s a little controversy floating around about the privacy concerns with picture-snapping shades. Remember the night vision camcorder that could see through clothes, or the camera-embedded Nano that was banned from certain gyms? Some worrisome web folks think these sunglasses fall in the same field. So what did Lady G have to say about all of this?

“You can come to one of my shows and wear them. Take pictures of me dancing on stage.”

What else can you expect from a 24-year-old mega star? Polaroid has yet to release a date that these sunglasses will be available to the public, stay tuned for more news.

Tory Burch, Sarah Jessica Parker and Other Celebs teaming with Google Fashion

Tory Burch will have her own shop on Google's fashion site.

Renowned fashion celebrity Sarah Jessica Parker and fashion expert Tory Burch have joined ranks with Google to support Google’s efforts to take over the fashion e-commerce industry. The name of the site hasn’t been released yet, but word has it that www.boutiques.com will be Google’s spearhead into the fashion world.

The site will not be a direct e-commerce business, but will act as a fashion portal and direct customers to existing fashion websites. Google has asked Tony Burch, Oscar de la Renta and Marchesa to establish virtual stores inside the site to generate some buzz for its grand opening. Google has also hired Sarah Jessica Parker to build her own store on the site and help launch the new business model. Check back for more details to come, you can read more about Google’s new fashion site here. ~ Carson

Beckham Kid Designing Own Line of Sunglasses

You know your son is talented when he designs his own line of sunglasses at 8 years old, or you know that you are incredibly rich to afford him to do so. Maybe a little of both.

The Beckhams, David and Victoria, have recently announced that their son Romeo is about to design his own line of sunglasses. Apparently the prodigy child has been begging to do so for quite some time, and and has enlisted other bazzillionaire celeb kids Suri Cruise, Leni Klum and Gordon Ramsay’s 4 kids to help him out. A mini celeb entourage, so it seems.

In case you forgot, David Beckham is a world famous footballer (English football, not NFL), and his world famous wife is world famous for being a member of the 1990s all-girl musical group The Spice Girls.

According to some online sources the frames will have RB on the arms as an abbreviation for Romeo Beckham, sounds like trademark infringement for Ray-Ban if you ask me.

The sunglasses are designed for children, and a release date is yet to me announced. We’ll keep you posted on the updates!

Elle Announces Runway Show this September

Always trying to remain one step ahead, Elle magazine is having its own runway show for Fashion Week this month. Two students from Rhode Island School of Design will showcase their work down a runway at David Koch Theater in the Lincoln Center in NYC on Sept. 9. The show will be judged by a panel of hosts, including designers from Tommy Hilfiger, Derek Lam, Nicole Miller and Kate Spade.

If you can’t make the show, Elle is producing a webisode series chronicling the young designers’ journey to the runway that will be broadcast on the Elle website. The challenge looks like it will be quite a ride, with an Elle and RISD Design Award and $25,000 grant going to the grand prize winner. You can check out Elle’s website for updates on the show.

Here’s a vid of Lady Gaga behind the scenes at her Elle photo shoot. If the runway show is anything remotely like Gaga’s fashion, it should be a wild one.

Saks Fifth Avenue Adding More Selection to Plus Sizes

Adhering to the desires of their customers, retail store Sax Fifth Avenue has announced that they will be adding more high-fashion selections to the 16, 18, and other larger women’s sizes. Though Saks already owns and operates Salon Z, a department for plus sizes, this new initiative is aimed at fashion clothing made for the runway.

The size change is an attempt to break the iconic look of the rail thin model. For years, media and consumers have been blasting the model industry for showcasing women who are abnormally thin, saying that it sends a bad message to women in general, especially teenagers. By adding more fashion clothing to the larger sizes, Saks Fifth Avenue hopes to set an example for other retailers.

Saks also has their own line of sunglasses, you can buy them online here.

Behind the Scenes Peek at Gucci’s 2011 Collection

Go behind the scenes at the Gucci MRTW S/S (men’s ready to wear spring/summer) 2011 fashion show. Frida Giannini, Gucci’s creative director since 2006, guides the tour of the patterns, fabrics, looks and leanings that characterize their upcoming seasonal collection. It’s really interesting and rare to hear descriptions straight from the creative director of a fashion house of this stature. The video also shows some new eyewear they’re revealing for spring summer 2011. Giannini describes the care and effort put into crafting many of the label’s designs, including how many of the accessories are handmade. Gucci’s eyewear has always been top notch and of great quality. Guess you don’t develop as revered a brand as Gucci if you aren’t designing progressively and manufacturing perfectly. 2010 Sees Eyewear on the Runway

In addition to emerging wardrobe staples, many of the industry’s top designers are putting eyewear on display on the runway in 2010.

At the Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear show, Emporio Armani presented a stylish take on this year’s military trend. He paired a warm-weather version of the pea coat, complete with large buttons, and a flouncy, A-line skirt both in charcoal gray. Up top, the model wore over-sized, round sunglasses with narrow legs reminiscent of Emporio Armani’s 9636 in black with grey, shaded lenses.

Prada featured several retro eyewear frames in their fall show which was characterized by 1950s throwback style. Slight cat-eye glasses, similar to the Prada 15MV, were paired with a khaki dress embellished with layers of bust ruffles. Several beehive hairdos were featured with top-heavy eyeglasses, like the Prada 07MV, in outrageous reds and yellows signifying there will be color in fall’s palette.

Valentino VAL 5687/S Sunglasses

Valentino VAL 5687/S Sunglasses

Runway fashion often seems designed to surprise and shock, and this year, eyewear is no exception. For spring 2010 Haute Couture, Valentino showed their contribution to the futuristic and sci-fi trend. Models took the runway in metallic tones, mummy-wrapped layers, and billowing outerwear that could double as a space suit. Attention was called to every model’s eyes through a combination of brightly colored stripes of paint or swathes of translucent fabric worn headband style over their eyes. Valentino may have done better to outfit the ladies in borderline futuristic frames from their sunglass collection, maybe the striped and smoky VAL 5558 or the strikingly large VAL 5687/S.
