Great Vision for Aviators

The flyspeck on the windscreen becomes an approaching aircraft on a collision course in mere seconds; a missed symbol on a map or a runway sign turns into a mortal calamity; a simple error in reading an instrument is a life and death matter in moments. Is it any wonder that issues related to vision are of paramount interest whenever aviators gather? Their own lives and the lives of many others depend on their vision and on their ability to meld visual information, knowledge and experience into quick, effective action.

Eyecare professionals (ECPs) need to understand the unique problems of aviators’ vision, yet few of them have much in-depth information or experience with the special visual and eyewear requirements of aviation. Correct frame choice, break resistance, absorptive properties, color recognition, glare and UV protection, anti-reflective properties, adaptation problems, contact lens use and presbyopia and its correction are only a few of the issues that should be given special consideration when designing eyewear for aviators.

Iconic sunglasses

There are certain sunglass styles that we automatically associate with celebrities. These iconic frames have shaped the eyewear choices of the public for years.

The first pair of sunglasses that come to mind when I’m thinking in terms of icons are Wayfarers. These are the sunglasses that you see on Audrey Hepburn in the classic, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”; the same shades are seen 22 years later on Tom Cruise in “Risky Business” and are worn by the Blues Brothers. Wayfarers can also be spotted in “Couples Retreat,” “Takers,” and “My Name is Khan.”

Sports Lens Technology: Deciding What Works for You

While most consumers are first attracted to a pair of sunglasses because of the frame style, discerning sunglass wearers are often just as interested in the performance features of the lenses. Thanks to recent advances in lens technology, today’s sun lenses boast an almost unlimited array of colors, styles, designs, materials and treatments specifically designed to enhance the wearer’s performance in a variety of sports and other activities. Because sun lenses are so rich in features, they present a great opportunity for eye care professionals to discuss a product’s benefits and recommend a combination of features to best suit each patient’s visual performance needs. Although many sun lenses are loaded with technical features, experienced eye care professionals and retailers say a non-technical explanation of sun lens benefits works best when presenting products to patients. Asking questions about the patient’s occupation or favorite recreational activities is a good way to zero in on their sun lens needs. For example, asking if a patient is bothered by glare or reflections is a natural lead-in to talking about polarized, photochromic or anti-reflective lenses. Sports vision experts emphasize dispensers must not only consider the sport, but also the conditions in which it’’s typically played, before prescribing a lens. Tints, mirror coatings, polarizing filters and backside AR all have their uses in athletics but must be dispensed correctly. Read more
