Kate Perry at Vogue Eyewear Dinner Party

So, while Googling for for eyewear news to blog about, I stumbled across a few blogs and PRs mentioning a Vogue Eyewear Dinner Part in Milan, Italy last Wednesday that featured an attendance by the graceful, twenty-something Kate Perry. Sounds like a great PR campaign for Vogue, right? Having a celebrity show up their event and garner some press attention. So far so good, but here is where I got a little confused:

So far, dear old Kate is the only celebrity that I can find that attended the Vogue party. Usually at these events it’s more than just one – celebs tend to travel in packs like wild hyenas trashing through the parties, consuming free drinks and smashing random valuables along the way. Unless this single celeb sighting PR stunt was intentional, KP is flying solo on this rare occasion. Also, she showed up promoting a Vogue Eyewear party wearing no eyewear, and a Christian Dior dress. Sends a mixed message if you ask me.

The blogs, press and whatnot are referring to her as a “Teenage Dream Singer,” though she is 26 and doesn’t look a day younger. Someone’s marketing campaign is all mixed up. Here’s a vid of Perry’s terribly catchy tune called Firework. Be warned: it will stick in your head like a piece of shrapnel. I’m gonna go back to listening to some Dead Horse.

Maui Jim Blends Art and Eyewear at Miami Boat Show

Maui Jim, one of the most popular outdoor sunglass companies in the world, has announced that they are debuting new models of sunglasses this Friday at Miami International Boat Show in the Miami Beach Convention Center. The new collection is by marine wildlife artist Guy Harvey.

Maui Jim sunglasses by artist Guy Harvey will be displayed this Friday at the International Miami Boat Show.

Harvey is a well-known painter, photographer, and marine biologist, whose work fits perfectly with Maui Jim’s outdoorsman style. Scenes from some of his paintings are recreated on the frames and temples, merging natural art with high-end eyewear. The models include the Yellowfin, The Grander, Mahi Mahi, and The Sailfish.

“Sunglasses should not only allow you to see better, but also help make a statement about your personal style,” said Linda Glassel, vice president of marketing for Maui Jim.

A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation. Check back here for more details to come.

Dwyane Wade’s Goggles Interfere with Knicks vs. Heat Game

Miami Heat man Dwyane Wade fuzzed up the game against The Knicks last Thursday night because of his goggles impairing his vision. Originally, Wade had intended to use his own goggles with tinted lenses to help reduce migraine headaches that he’s been having. The NBA ruled out his personal goggles, stating that the tinted lenses prevent the opposing team from seeing his eyes and reading his moves, which wouldn’t be fair. So the league gave him a pair of orange-tinted, league-approved goggles instead.

The new goggles didn’t pan out so well for Wade or The Heat. Wade turned over a ball to The Knicks while he was adjusting his goggles, apparently from the glare. He also missed seven free throws in the fourth, which pretty much cost his team the game at 93-88.

Here’s our advice to Wade: get some league-approved sports glasses with all the bells and whistles, like anti-glare, polarized and anti-fog. Try some Oakley M-frames and don’t let your glasses lose the game.

Navy Seals Issue LCD Sunglasses

FTPE, or Fast Tint Protective Eyewear (not pictured above), sunglasses are currently being used by U.S. military.

Liquid Crystal Display sunglasses – come on, are you really surprised? At the speed that technology is moving today it was only a matter of time before the U.S. Military got some really cool shades, James Bond style. That day is today. Uncle Sam recently announced that U.S. special troops like the NAVY SEALS frogman commando unit will now be adorning high-tech LCD sunglasses that change color with the click of a button. These sunglasses can change from amber, blue, gray, or clear instantly all with the push of a finger. How and why you say? Here’s the down low.

Sunglasses that change tints which we everyday consumers are use to are called Photochromic. The technology behind theses shades is that they change tint when exposed to UV light. The only downside to these, from a military perspective, is that sometimes the tint-changing process can take a few seconds, or even a few minutes, to full convert from one tint to another. These few seconds can be quite costly or even life threatening if you’re running from inside a dark abandoned building to direct sunlight outside, and while being bombarded with bullets, blasts and flying debris. The other option is changeable lenses, which again takes time, effort and distraction to take the lenses out and replace them with a different tint.

Enter LCD sunglasses. Freevisioninfo.com wrote a blog about this newly discovered technology a few months ago, and the military saw an obvious need for it and picked it up quite quickly. The U.S. is calling them FTPE or Fast-Tint-Protective Eyewear because they tint within the blink of an eye and they are ballistic rated. So here is how the FTPE lenses differ from Photochromic:

Whereas Photochromic lenses depend on UV light and slow reaction time to change, FTPE have neither. LCD technology is nothing new, but the implementation into eyewear is. LCD lenses change to certain hues when heated to certain temperatures. The LCD lenses are are heated by a small electric battery charge, which is fine-tuned to specific degrees, therefore certain colors. By clicking a button, soldiers change their sunglass tints accordingly without any help from sun. According to official statements, the FTPE transition time is less than .5 seconds.

As of now the FTPE sunglasses aren’t available to the public, but if they follow the footsteps of other military apparel, like Aviator sunglasses or Cargo pants, it’s only a matter of time before they become mainstream fashion. Imagine combining a pair of FTPE sunglasses with Lady Gaga’s camera sunglasses, now that would be James Bond worthy!

Optacaddy Protects Eyeglasses While You’re Not Wearing Them

Optacaddy offers a convenient storage option for your eyeglasses or sunglasses.

Optacaddy offers a convenient storage option for your eyeglasses or sunglasses.

If you’re like me, when you take your glasses off you toss them on the counter, the desk, the bedside table, or wherever is most convenient at the moment. The problem with this is your glasses end up getting scratched, bent and damaged in all sorts of subtle and not so subtle ways. Just a little wear and tear over a few weeks can lead to a pair of glasses that are so damaged they become unusable. That’s where Optacaddy comes in.

I recently discovered this website as a reference from a friend, and all I can say is this – finally! My eyeglasses and eyes are thanking me after my purchase of this wonderful tool called the Optacaddy. Such as simple device, yet is so useful, is really what every eyeglass owner needs. The Optacaddy fits comfortably on any surface: whether it is your desk at work or the kitchen counter. Simply drop your frames in the Optacaddy and they’ll be free from harm. No more worrying about where you put your glasses or getting them damaged from being tossed around: the Optacaddy keeps them safe and in a place you will remember. They also come in different colors to match the decor of whatever room you place them in.

And, of special interest to parents, they are available in sizes for Teens & Tweens and Toddlers & Tots to help your kids store their glasses properly.

I highly recommend the Optacaddy, you can order them online at Optacaddy.com.
