Are You a Fat Head? We’ve Got Your Sunglasses!
Posted by Eyeglasses Guy on August 2, 2007 · 6 Comments
We’re pleased to announce the additon of Fatheadz sunglasses to our catalog. Fatheadz are extra-wide sunglasses and optical eyewear for those of us with extraordinarily large noggins.
The history of this jumbo sunglasses collection stems from the founder, Rico Elmore, who tried on hundreds of sunglasses and coudn’t find any that were a comfortable fit for his extra round face, so he decided to create his own.
Fatheadz are now the official sunglasses for The Hooters Pro Cup Series, United States Auto Club and CRA Super Series. In addition, countless pro football players, including the Indianapolis Colts, and other large athletic types are now adorned with Fatheadz eyewear.
So, do you think you’re big enough? Fatheadz sunglasses are for people whose head circumference measures at least 23 1/2 inches or more above the ears. Size really does matter!
Read it from a satisfied Fatheadz customer:
My name is Charlie Sasse, I wear a size 8 in a hat! I have never been able to buy a pair of sunglasses that truly fit. I have always had to bend and stretch NEW glasses to get them to not look as if I bought them in the kids section! I was given my first pair of FatHeadz as a gift from a fellow Well Craniumly Endowed friend! I was amazed and instantly fanatical about these odd glasses called FatHeadz. I was on vacation in Florida recently and broke my glasses. I was HEART BROKEN!!! These were also the glasses I used when riding my cycle! Now I have just ordered my second pair and was elated to see your new transition lenses! I now will have a great pair of glasses that not only keep the air out of my eyes during the day, but also at NIGHT! I just wanted to say thanks to all of you guys and everyone else that not only makes it possible for all of us FATHEADZ to wear a pair of glasses that fit, but to also look good while doing it! I am looking forward to receiving my new pair soon, and also looking forward to checking out the new wire frames for prescription glasses I heard about! Keep the hits coming! You have another life long customer here! I hope you take the time to read this email, I am truly sincere with what I have written.
Thank You Very Much,
Charlie Sasse

We’re working on it. In the meantime, try our QuickFind utility. After you select Gender, Material and Type on the first page, you’ll be given options to refine your search by Price, Eye Size and Temple Size.
Keep in mind that this search utility is in beta and there are still some bugs. Once completed, we will be adding it to the main site.
I, too, need LONGheadz glasses. It’s various tedious working pair by pair looking at Safilo as recommended above to find glasses with long temples. My optometrist suggested I needed 160.
Your website would be much easier to use if you offered a SEARCH function based on BUYER’s interest such as Temple size, PD size, width, etc.
Is there a simple way to search your brands for long temple length frames?
Jim
There is no real average width of faces that we are aware of. Frame sizes are labeled by the horizontal width of the lens section of the frame, called the “eyesize”. Frames with an “eyesize” of greater than 55 mm are usually considered suitable for those with larger heads. A company called Fatheadz does make a line of eyewear for the wider face.
I have a fat head? But my question is: what is the average face width for an adult male and female?
Kyle,
The measurement that you will need to keep in mind is the temple length. It is listed on most frames on the FramesDirect.com website. The average is 135 mm – 145 mm. If you believe you require a longer temple length, you will need to look for temple lengths of 150 mm or higher.
If you are looking for eyeglasses, I would look at brands like Safilo or Charmant. They have frames with longer lengths.
If you are looking for sunglasses, I would recommend taking a look at Rayban, Maui Jim, or Serengeti.
Hope this helps!

The width of my head is pretty average, but the front to back length of my head is quite another story.
Do you have any suggestions for us LongHeadz?
